A group of Americans on vacation in Cancun, Mexico were slammed by a Mexican newspaper late last week after they chanted “Build the wall!” while on a tourist ship.

… The editorial goes on to note that while “several Mexican tourists on board the ship expressed their annoyance,” the Americans nonetheless “did not stop at all and continued singing the racist hymn.”

The editorial concludes that this “situation is far from being an isolated incident, and it adds to the growing number of complaints from tourism sector workers, who point out that in recent days many Spring Breakers have been offensive, rude and haughty towards Mexican people.”

I hope those people are identified as hostile foreign actors and never allowed back into Mexico as long as they live.

native, latina, and black girls have been pushing boundaries and trends with what little monetary means we have for as long as the collective american fashion memory exists; it’s been us who have been making and wearing jewelry considered gaudy, cheap, and obnoxious, it’s been us making fashion statements our of dollar tube tops and high waisted leggings, it’s been us doing our hair tight or big, we are the origin of resourcefulness, girls on reservations and in the poorest neighborhoods were drawing on their beauty marks and getting glossy long before girls on instagram, we are queens of the dollar store and beauty shop, and it astounds me that not only are these looks being taken without a nod to the source, they are being put at designer price points. meanwhile we’re still out here doing our highlighter with two dollar shimmer eye shadow and scrubbing thrifted white adidas shoes clean with plastic toothbrushes, and we’re looking great

everything that’s marketed exclusively to women is restrictive and nonfunctional

our clothes are thin and form fitting, so that we are constantly on display. we are not given pockets, but expected to carry with us expensive decorative bags. we are made to wear skirts, because pants allow too much freedom of movement. fashion > function

we are expected to spend excessive time painting a second face over our natural one. there is no purpose for this other than reaping our excess time and money. with this artificial face we cannot lie down, we cannot eat freely, we cannot cry. fashion > function

our shoes are high heeled, open toed, preventing us from running freely or even walking comfortably. we suffer bone injuries and muscle deterioration. fashion > function.

we are expected to remove our body hair. much like makeup, the function of this is to occupy our excess time and reap our excess money. shaving cuts lead to infection. for some women, shaving results in painful rashes on the legs. fashion > function

our hair is meant to be long and decorative. easily tangled, easily grabbed in an altercation. black women especially are expected to heat damage their hair rather than allow it to grow naturally. fashion > function

a woman who defies any of these expectations, especially more than one at any given time, is subjected to ridicule, discrimination, and violence. femininity is a strict performance of subservience that is inaccessible to most women, but all are forcefully bound to it in a society dominated by men. this is because men fear what would happen if women began to realize just how severely they are being exploited.

I'm sick of seeing "white people have no culture" everywhere. Hollywood glamour, wild west, burgers and shakes, flapper fashion, and flower power culture! These are all parts of white culture; they're relatively new and modern but they ARE white culture. The only difference is that white people WANT TO SHARE. They want to call it "American" and erase race from the equation so anyone can embody those caricatures and just have FUN!

Granted, there is no monolithic white culture and the stuff that you mentioned above isn’t limited to white people (there were a lot of black and Latino cowboys, flapper style was influenced by the jazz era, which was pioneered by black people, etc.), but everybody has a culture, white people included. There are fifty individual countries in Europe, for one. America has its own culture, though it isn’t “white” culture. Furthermore, culture isn’t limited to race or ethnicity. Individual cities and states have their own cultures. There are religious cultures. LGBT culture. Deaf culture. All kinds of subcultures. People need to stop conflating culture with skin color.
